1) As September is winding down, we can see that nine of the 12 calendar months of 2005 will have passed at the end of the day on September 30. This will mean 9/12 = 3/4 = 75% of 2005 will have passed, when considering just the months. If we instead want to know what percent of the days in 2005 have passed at the end of the last day of September, what is our answer? Express your answer to the nearest tenth.

2) At the end of the month, school teachers around the country will be taking down the individual paper letters that spell out SEPTEMBER across the top of their bulletin boards and putting up a new set of letters for OCTOBER. What is the probability that if Jacob randomly picks up a letter from the pile of paper letters used to spell out SEPTEMBER, his letter can be used when putting up the word OCTOBER? Express your answer as a common fraction.

3) Ms. Carol’s bulletin board is 5 feet wide. Each letter she will be using to spell out OCTOBER on her bulletin board is 5 inches wide and she wants to put OCTOBER across the top of the board and centered from left to right. If she will leave 1.5 inches of blank space between each of the letters, how many inches from the left side of the board should she place the left-most side of the first "O?"

Bonus Problems for the Week of September 19th

Try this bonus problems for 5 bonus points each. Show your solutions to Mr. Fu before you turn them in so that he can congratulate you!

These problems come from MathCounts.

1) You may not have realized it, but Oregon has four of the 18 most active volcanoes in the United States. What percent of the country’s most active volcanoes is not in Oregon? Express your answer to the nearest whole percent.

2) In addition to the known volcanoes in Oregon, a bulge that is rising out of the ground is catching the eye of scientists, and some speculate this might be another volcano that is forming. Scientists speculate that the land has been rising at an average rate of 1.4 inches per year starting in 1997. According to these numbers, what would be the total rise of the land at the end of 2005, in inches?

3) Not only is the amount of the rising significant, but so is the land area that the bulge covers. It is estimated to cover 100 square miles. If the land area were in the shape of a perfect square with an area of 100 square miles, what would be the perimeter of that square, in miles? If the land area were instead in the shape of a perfect circle with an area of 100 square miles, what would be the circumference of that circle, in miles? Express this answer to the nearest whole mile.

4) It is believed that the bulge that is forming is probably a result of a pool of magma collecting below the earth’s surface, and that the amount of magma is equal in size to a lake 1 mile across and 65 feet deep. Though lake bottoms are not in the perfect shape of a cone, what is the volume, in cubic feet, of a right cone with a diameter of 1 mile and a height of 65 feet? Express your answer to the nearest million cubic feet.

Mistakes in the Summer Answer Key

Mario V. came by today and got his homework checked (Yeah Mario!)

As we were checking his homework, we found three mistakes on the Standford 9 answer key. Here are the mistakes:

On page 34, #4 should be A, and #16 should be 112.

On page 48, #7 should be E.

Sorry for the mistakes. Mario suggests that we sue the Stanford 9 practice book for making an incorrect answer key.
